JOSEPH KAREL, JR. DIES IN COLUMBUS
Joseph E.Karel, Jr., 79, Columbus, died February 8, 2002, at Columbus Community Hospital.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. on February 12 at New Zion Presbyterian Church, Clarkson. Rev. Don Wilson and Rev. Dr. earl F. Underwood, Jr. officiated. Burial was at Clarkson National Cemetery with military honors conducted by Cornhusker Post 6419 of the VFW.

Sally Goodman, organist, accompanied the Czech choir for the church.

Karel was born March 23, 1922, in Stanton County on a farm north of Leigh, to Joseph E. Sr. and Emily (Mundil) Karel. He attended Stanton County rural school.

He married Delores Nadrchal on January 3, 1946 at New Zion Presbyterian Church, Clarkson.

He was a member of Federated Church, Columbus, New Zion Presbyterian Church, Cornhusker Post 6419 of the VFW and the ZCBJ Lodge.

He farmed north of Leigh for many years before moving to Columbus in 1974 where he worked for Fleischer Manufacturing until his retirement. He enjoyed playing cards, fishing with his grandson, working in the yard, wood carving and collecting pens and pencils.

He served in the Army Air Force during WWII. He was a waist gunner and flew 50 missions over Germany.

Surviving include his wife, a son, Lonnie (Brenda), Carrolton, Ga.; a daughter, Lorie (Mrs. Clem) Wasko, Omaha; 3 grandchildren; 4 step grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; 2 brothers, Jerry, Clarkson, and Stanley, Columbus; 2 sisters, Emily Kratochvil, Colorado, and Adeline Sedlacek , Columbus.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Libbie Hocksmier, and two brothers, Milo and Frank.
