Erasmus is thought to be the son of Lt. Peter Sprinkle & Nancy Redfern.

Erasmus married twice: (1) Margaret M. Jackson, 20 Nov 1839, Madison Co., VA; & (2) Mary Catherine Jourdon Alford, 20 Sep 1880.

He & Margaret had three daughters: Cremora Catherine (Barr); Emily Fenton (Jackson); & Louisa Challis (Berrey).

Erasmus was a farmer. After Margaret's death, he moved to Travis Co., TX. He & his grandson, William Braxton Barr, built a cotton gin and general store. Barr named the community where they lived Sprinkle, TX.

In Dec 1885, Erasmus was given permission to open a post office at Sprinkle. According to "New Handbook of Texas OnLine," by 1890, Sprinkle, TX had 3 churches, a school, a general store, and a population of about 100. When cotton prices fell in the 1920's, the town of Sprinkle began to decline. The post office continued until about 1940. Today what was the town of Sprinkle, TX is now part of Austin. It is a relatively rural area. There is a street named Sprinkle Rd.

Erasmus has two tombstones. One appears to be a military marker and the other a traditional tombstone placed by the family. Curiously the stones have two different dates of death. The date on the family tombstone matches his death records: 25 Jun 1906.

Erasmus was referred to as Capt. Sprinkle. However, his tombstone indicates he was a private. Captain must have been a title of respect for the old gentleman, who lived to be 93 years old.
