From obituary: Mr. Roy E. Smith, 67 years, died very unexpectedly Saturday evening, July 1, 1989. His survivors include his wife, Doroty M.,3 daughters, Mrs Barbara Johnson of Whitehall, Mrs.Terry (Linda) Brandt of Whitehall and Miss Peggy Smith (and close friend George Moline) of Muskegon: 3 sons, Tom (wife Kathy) Smith, James Smith and Carl (wife Sharon) Smith all of Muskegon; 3 grandchildren, Michele Johnson and Mark and Tim Brandt. Mr. Smith was born in Muskegon on March 8, 1922 and had been a lifetime area resident. On July 1, 1947 he married the former Dorothy M. Berg in Muskegon. During WWII he served in the U.S.Army. Mr. Smith was an avid player in the sport of horseshoes, having won the State Horseshoe Pitchers Association Championship 14 times and placing 5th in the World Tournament. He was a member of the National Horseshoe Pitchers Assoc., past President of the M-46 Horseshoe Assoc., the Vasa Trigg Lodge No.536 and had been in charge of the City Recreation Dept. for Horseshoes. Mr. Smith was also active in the following sports: Golf, Archery and Baseball and Football in High School. Before his retirement, he was employed as an inspector with Teledyne C.M.C. Mr.Smith was a member of Orchard View Congregational Church. The funeral rites will be Wednesday afternoon, 2;00 at Orchard View Congregational Church,2175 Marquette Ave., with his pastor, Stephen Sweeting officiating. Interment in Sunrise Memorial Gardens
