Born Johannes Alfred Smeds in Härnösand, Sweden. The family lived in Harrström, Finland and John was born while visiting Sweden.

Mr. John A. Smith, 84 years, died Saturday evening October 11, 1980. He was born in Härnosänd, Sweden, April 2, 1896 and had been a Muskegon area resident for the past 68 years. On October 23, 1915, he married the former Ida Kronberg, whose death occurred Feburary 15 1975. Before his retirement, Mr. Smith had been a belt sander at American Store Equipment Co. He attended Orchard View Congregational Church. His survivors includes a son, Roy E. Smith of Muskegon, 3 sisters, Mrs. John A. (Alvina) Kronberg of Muskegon, Mrs. Selma Kallin and Mrs. Hilda Kvist, both of Sweden, 10 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. Another son, Raymond Smith predeceased his father, January 2, 1978. The funeral rites for Mr. Smith will be Tuesday afternoon, 1:30 o'clock, in the Garden Chapel ot the Achterhoff Mortuarymwith the Rev. Rod Wetzig officiating. Interment in Surnrise Memoril Gardens, Muskegon.
