During high school, WWII broke out and upon graduating, Elmer joined the Navy. He went to school to become an electrician, while waiting for his ship, the USS Frybarger, a Destroyer Escort, to be commissioned, he married his high school sweetheart, Gertrude Louise Carr on September 19, 1942 and was married for sixty- two years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Gertrude, his daughter Carolyn Sue Russell, four sisters Alma, Madge, Ruth and Florence; two brothers Hebert and Boyd.
He is survived by twin sisters Reva and Reba; brothers Cecil and Ralph; son Donnie and wife Barbara of Clovis, NM; son-in-law Scott Russell of Mustang, OK; five grandchildren Stacey, Mike, Christopher, Jon and Nicholas; seven great grandchildren Brittany, Morgan, Andrew, Ashley, Jimmy, Cori and Jayde; and one great-great granddaughter Trinity Nicole.
After the war, Elmer joined the American Legion and remained a member through the Korean War and up until 1960. He worked for Union Carbide at the Oak Ridge Nuclear Facility in Oak Ridge, TN until 1960 when he sold the family home he built after the war and moved his family to CA for better job opportunities. He put himself through a new and upcoming data processing school. After completing the school, he became a computer programmer and was immediately hired by Pacific Intermountain Express, PIE, where he rapidly advanced and soon was offered a better position with Peterson Tractor in San Leandro, CA, a dealership for the Caterpillar Tractor Co., as head programmer; a job that took him through retirement in 1987.
He will be deeply missed by his family and by his many friends at Grace Living Center SW, OKC.
