The date of birth on her stone is inaccurate. Her date of birth was listed in her mother's Bible-13 Dec 1858. Her date of birth is given as 15 Nov 1861 on her death certificate. She was one of 14 children. Contrary to what was believed, none of them were any part Native American.

Mary Caldona was first married at the age of 14 to James Jackson, who died in Shelton Laurel, Madison County, NC about 1885. She had two children with him, a son who died, and daughter, Addie. Her second marriage in 1886 was to Stephen Franklin of Shelton Laurel, who died in Waynesville, NC in 1919.

Her children were: Addie Jackson Ramsey, Ople Franklin Bumgarner, Ida Belle Franklin Ray, Jefferson Clark Franklin, and Napoleon Bonapart Franklin.
