Eva Worsham was a woman of few words. She was born and lived the first 30 or so years in Bluff, North Carolina, a very isolated mountain community. She had her first child, Dewey, in 1901. Her second, daughter Deniza, was born about 1913, and there was a third daughter, Dora, in about 1915. In 2011, an elderly niece revealed the father of her oldest children as the storekeeper, Vance Russell, but DNA tests confirmed that their father had been Vance's brother Cecil Shober Russell.
In about 1917, Eva's sister Mae Findley moved her mother, Eva, and Eva's children to Eatonton, Georgia, where she had a boarding house. Eva worked in the boarding house. Eventually they left Eatonton and went first to Spartanburg, SC and then to Bamberg, SC in about 1922. Mae had another boarding house. They didnt stay in Bamberg long; soon the household, minus Eva's son, Dewey, moved to Charleston, SC, where Eva was to remain the rest of her life.
Eva helped with her mother's care and helped Mae in the boarding house. Beginning in 1930, after her mother died, Eva and her brother Rueben Worsham are found in the city directories sharing a house near the boarding house, until 1934. Eva is found on the 1940 census in Bluff, NC, presumably helping with the care of her sister, Addie. After that Eva returned to Charleston, and lived with her daughter Dora, helping to care for her children.
Eva was an excellent seamstress; she could make anything. She and Mae did a lot of quilting. She also loved to read. She named her son Durward Belmont, after the main male character in a popular novel published in 1859, Lena Rivers. Eva died of leukemia.
