He was born on July 31, 1925, in Greene County, the son of the late John Samuel and Mary Riner Root
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Maude Root Herring and Hallie Pearl Root.
He leaves to cherish his memory, a sister, Margie Root Norford and her husband, Mannie W. Norford Jr., his beloved brother-in-law; his nephew, Richard M. Norford and his wife, Kay; two nieces, Faye Norford and Penny Norford; a great-niece, Wendy Tonker; and a great nephew, Bobby Tonker.
He was a graduate of William Monroe High School in Stanardsville, Virginia. He served his country during World War II, stationed in Japan and the Philippine Islands and was honorably discharged.
Mr. Root was a lifetime member of Spring Hill Baptist Church and was employed for many years as a textile worker. After his retirement he spent some of his time farming.
A funeral service will be held 3 p.m. Wednesday, December 15, 2010, at Spring Hill Baptist Church with Reverend Dan Carlton officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will follow at Spring Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family would like to acknowledge their appreciation to the staff at Evergreene Meadows.
