John S. Root, 74, a farmer, died Thursday at his home near Ruckersville after a long illness. He was a son of the late William and Willie Maude Durrer Root.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Mary Riner Root; two daughters, Miss Hallie and Miss Margie Root, of Ruckersville; a son Oland Root, of Ruckersville; a brother, Oland Root, of Clifton Forge; a half-brother, Ross Root, of Arlington; and four half-sisters, Mrs. Bernnia Richards, of Ruckersville, Mrs. Lois Snow, of Somerset, and Mrs. Ethel Durrer and Miss Forest Root, of Charlottesville.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday from the Spring Hill Baptist Church at Advance Mills, with burial in the church cemetery. The Rev. Charles Boyer Jr., pastor of the Green Hill Baptist, will officiate.
