Zilpha was the daughter of James Beard and Mary Emily Higgins. She married John Ashmore on 24 Nov 1869 in Knox County, Illinois. John was a veteran of the Civil War, having served with Co G 11th Ohio Cavalry.
In 1873 they came to Iowa and in 1874 to Villisca. Zilpha and John had seven children: Hattie, Charles Elmer, Lydia J, Lulu, Eva Luella, Venus, and Lester.
John died in 1910 at the age of 63 years. Zilpha died at the home of her son-in-law, Eldon Nace, in 1919 at the age of 65 years 11 months.
