When the War of the Rebellion broke out, James enlisted in the service of his country. At the age of 45 he enlisted on 18 Oct 1863 as a Private. He mustered into Co H 12th Ohio Cavalry on 5 Nov 1863. Was promoted to Full Corporal on 1 Jul 1865. Mustered out on 14 Nov 1865 at Nashville, Tennessee.
The family moved from Ohio to Illinois in 1868 and to Villisca, Iowa, in September 1874. His wife, Mary Emily, died in 1885. Their children were Asa Gadius who married Mary E Ashmore; Samantha Jane who married William Harvey Willett; Nancy Elizabeth who married George Graves; Wilson Benjamin Beard; Zilpha Ann who married John Ashmore; Mary Almeda who married George Marcell and then J Wesley Stallings; and George E Beard.
James died in 1898 in Villisca at the age of 70 years.
