Asa G. Beard
Asa G. Beard, for nearly fifty years a resident of this community, died Wednesday morning at 4:30 o’clock at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Ada Craig, in Villisca, his death resulting from paralysis.
He was born in Highland county, Ohio, on Feb 5, 1846, and was the son of James and Emily Beard. He was married in Hillsboro, Ohio, on Feb. 18, 1867, and was the father of nine daughters and four sons, seven of whom are now living. They are Mrs. Ada Craig and Lon and Bert Beard of Villisca, Mrs. Edith Maher of Atlantic, and Harry, Less and Claude Beard of Clarinda.
Mr. Beard’s wife preceded him in death several years. He leaves one sister, Mrs. Harriet Higgins of Villisca, a brother George of Lincoln, Neb., and a brother Ben of Shenandoah.
Mr. Beard came to Iowa in 1873, settling on a farm near Villisca and was engaged in farming for many years. He served his country in the civil war and was a member of Co. A, 175th Ohio infantry. He was a member of the G.A. R. and of the Methodist church.
The funeral was held in the Methodist church Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock, with Rev. J.L. Boyd in charge of the service. The pallbearers were members of the American legion. Those from out of town to attend the funeral were Geo. Beard of Lincoln, Ben Beard of Shenandoah, Less, Harry and Claude Beard of Clarinda, and Mrs. Edith Maher of Atlantic.

Asa enlisted as a Private on 29 Aug 1864 at the age of 18. He mustered into Co A 175th Ohio Infantry on 10 Sep 1864 and mustered out on 27 Jun 1865 at Nashville, Tennessee.
