After considerable research, her family is found and she is married to Michael Holland who is abt 25 years older on the 1850 census with 4 Heath children and 2 Holland children. In 1855 Michael Holland is no longer present but she has a new son James Holland born 1852. In the 1855 NY census Ephratah death records there is a listing for a 63 year old male who died in December 1854 who was a farmer and died with enlarged heart. No name was given but this could have been Michael Holland because his wife, Elizabeth, is listed as a widow that year. More research is needed.
In 1860, all the children are living with older siblings' families or hired out to other families. For example my great grandmother Mary Holland age 15 is with another family probably as a maid. Elizabeth shows up on the 1860 census as Elizabeth Steenburgh married to Isaac Steenburgh/Steenberg who is 20 years older and her nephew David's father-in-law. In 1880 Isaac is living with his son-in-law David Duesler. In 1860 she is listed as Isaac's wife plus the Steenburgh children. Isaac's wife in 1850 was Mary,Maria or Martha. In 1865, Elizabeth is listed without Isaac but she and her son James have taken the Steenburgh name. In 1870 she keeps the Steenburgh name and her son goes back to the Holland name. In 1875, she has the Steenburgh name, lives with her son James Holland and a 6 year old boarder. Her occupation is listed as "abandoned by husband". Isaac is listed in a different household at 83 yrs of age. In 1880 she goes back to the Holland name.
On the 1868 map at left a Mrs Hollan is shown on the bottom road. This is her property on route 140 about 2 miles west of town. Her parents are buried just north where it says P. Duesler and her brother W Duesler's farm was located just before rt.140 crosses Caroga Creek. Other images at left show her as Mrs Holloren, farmer, with 3.5 acres and in the 1875 state census as Elizabeth Steenburgh with occupation: "abandoned by husband".
I have received excellent help with my Ephratah ancestors from Evelyn Frasier - Ephratah Historian.
