HYANNIS — Ruth (Larkin) Babusci passed away peacefully on Monday, Dec. 6, 2010, at the McCarthy Care Center in East Sandwich. Her beloved son, Ralph, was with her.She was predeceased by her husband of 43 years, Ralph A. Babusci Sr., who died on Dec. 17, 1986.Ruth was born in Boston to Daniel and Clara Larkin of Boston and Harwich. She was the fifth of their seven children. Ruth was predeceased by her six siblings: Daniel Larkin, Alice Brosnahan, Robert Larkin, Francis Larkin, Marguerite Welch and James Larkin. Ruth is survived by one child, Ralph A. Babusci Jr. of Hyannis.She is also survived by 20 Larkin nieces and nephews, all of whom she was quite proud: Richard Larkin (Wakefield, R.I.) Dan Larkin (Salida, Colo.), Gail McHugh (Norwell, Mass.), Mary Larkin (Harwich, Mass.), James Brosnahan (Berkley, Calif.), Bob Larkin (San Diego, Calif.), Kathee Larkin-Estey (Palm Desert, Calif.), Jeanne Larkin-Henry (Melrose, Mass.), Louise Bergstrom (Harwich, Mass.), Fran Larkin (Newburyport, Mass.), Theresa Niles (Plattsburgh, N.Y.), Debbie Barker (Harwichport, Mass.), Cathy McDowell (Ringgold, Ga.), Mike Welch (South Burlington, Vt.), Susan Bremer (Boothbay Harbor, Maine), Anne Larkin (Portland Ore.), Jim Larkin (Renton, Wash.), Mike Larkin (La Crescenta, Calif.), Sam Larkin (San Luis Obispo, Calif.) and Chris Larkin (Bainbridge Island, Wash.).Ruth grew up in Boston. She attended St. Mark's Parish Elementary School and was a member of that school's first graduating class. She then attended St. Gregory's High School in Dorchester, where in her junior year she had the inspiration to become a nurse while the class was singing a hymn to the Blessed Mother ("Mary, Help in pain and sorrow"¦").Ruth was a loving mother to her son, Ralph, for which he is eternally grateful. She always encouraged him in his endeavors and literally bragged about his smallest accomplishments. As an RN, she often served as his personal nurse and medical advisor at home. Among Ruth's proudest accomplishments was graduating from the rigorous Boston City Hospital School of Nursing program, and then receiving her license as a registered nurse in Massachusetts, at the age of 21.She worked as a nurse at Boston City, and also in California during World War II, waiting for her husband who was serving as naval officer in the Pacific. She later worked at hospitals in the Philadelphia area, when the family settled in Drexel Hill, Pa., (suburban Philadelphia) in the early 1950s. In the early 1970s, she became a full-time homemaker and thrived as a busy planner and organizer of family activities.In 1982, Ruth and her husband retired to Cape Cod, a long-held dream, and settled in Hyannis. Here, her talent and enthusiasm as a "meet and greet" volunteer were displayed at the Melody Tent, where she was a volunteer usher for approximately 20 years. "Aisle 8" was her favorite location to meet guests enjoying summer theater. She often had the opportunity to meet celebrity entertainers, and she enjoyed the atmosphere and excitement of the shows.Ruth also volunteered at the JFK Museum in Hyannis since it started in the early 1990s until 2009. She thoroughly enjoyed meeting visiting tourists who came from around the country and the world. She often engaged guests in conversation about where they were from, and provided direction on various features of the museum. Ruth was very proud to have her father shown as a member of the Harwich Baseball team (C. 1904) in a picture she submitted to the Cape Cod Baseball Hall of Fame Museum, located downstairs from the JFK Museum.Ruth's interest as a volunteer greeter actually started in San Francisco during World War II, where she volunteered at the Opera House and also the Stage Door Canteen, which served military personnel.Ruth enjoyed reading and keeping up with current events. With her son, she was a parishioner of Our Lady of Victory Parish in Centerville. She was also a longtime member of the Our Lady of Assumption Parish Women's Guild (Osterville, MA) and the Hyannis Yacht Club.Ruth's son is grateful for the care and support received from her personal physician, Dr. Walter T. Rymzo Jr., and also from Dr. Lawrence S. McAuliffe. He is also grateful for the outstanding care his mother received at the McCarthy Care Center (Hospice and Palliative Care of Cape Cod) during her final days. And he thanks the Visiting Nurse Association of Cape Cod, and those who cared for her at Cape Cod Hospital.A viewing will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 11, at Our Lady of Victory Church, 230 South Main St., Centerville, followed at 11 a.m. by a Mass of Christian Burial.
