Clara Louise Mexal was the daughter of Cornelia Fehd and Rene Mexal. Her parents lived in Boston and raised their children there. Clara was the youngest of four children. She had two sisters, Matilda and Kate, who were born in the mid 1870s and a brother, George, who was born three years before her. Sadly her sister, Kate, died at one year of age.
Clara worked in Boston before meeting and marrying Daniel Joseph Larkin in 1908. The couple raised their family of seven children in Boston until the depression after which they moved back to Cape Cod to Daniel's childhood home.
Clara was very accomplished at crocheting. She made many yarn afghans for her children and grandchildren over her lifetime. She also crocheted decorative doilies, table runners, bedspreads, and table covers from cotton thread. It is quite amazing that she did all her fine crochet work even though she had only full use of her left hand. She lost the use of her right hand when she got a life threatening infection in her right arm and hand. After she recovered the fingers on her right hand could not grasp and were stiff but she could place the crochet hook through her fingers and create beautiful pieces of hand work.
