Claude Caldwell died peacefully at home surrounded by his family on February 8, 2017 in Raleigh, NC at the age of 98.

Claude is survived by his wife Mary; children Claudia DeMarco(Bill), Lamar Caldwell (Sandra), Weston Caldwell (Rhonda), Beth Porter (Bill) and Nancy Butler (Richard), two sisters - Martha Power and Barbara Perrow; seven grandchildren - Ben, Olivia, Kate, Alex, Austin, Andy, and Amelia; two great grandsons - Marcello and Aiden and a step granddaughter - Maggie. He is preceded in death by his parents Lamar and Martha Caldwell and three sisters - Edith Buchanan, Elizabeth Rhodes and Avarilla Averette.

Claude was born on October 25, 1918 in the house his grandfather James Caldwell built on his farm in Meriwether County, Georgia. He graduated from Emory at Oxford, a junior college in 1937. He pursued his studies at Emory University and later the University of Georgia Evening College, where he received his Bachelor of Commercial Science degree with honors in 1944. During this time, he held various jobs including working with his father in his auto repair shop, wiring homes for electricity, teaching and coaching high school and a Navy seaman during World War II. He also was Dean of Students at the Evening College's training school for Skilled Trades for the National Youth Administration. In 1943, he was hired by the new Georgia State Merit System. This proved to be a major turning point in his career. In 1945, he entered the Lamar School of Law at Emory University graduating in 1949. Claude married Mary Tollison on December 23, 1948 and they moved into their first home in Atlanta. Between July 1950 and December 1959, five children were welcomed into the family. In 1953, Claude and Mary moved to Richmond, Virginia where he worked for the city of Richmond. In1956, the family moved to Raleigh and Claude began his career with the North Carolina State Merit System. The Merit System and Personnel System were merged in 1965 and Claude was named the Director of the State Personnel Department where he served until 1974.

After his fist retirement, he used his knowledge of personnel issues to explore and make recommendations for improvements in processes and procedures at several of the campuses of The University of North Carolina. He also taught a graduate level class in Public Personnel Administration at North Carolina State University, became the organizational resource in a transitional process of the NC Employment Security Commission and conducted a study resulting in a new personnel manual for the North Carolina judicial branch of government.

After his second retirement, he commenced to take every undergraduate course in the school of Horticulture at NC State University and to volunteer at the J.C. Raulston Arboretum. The arboretum and gardening at home had always been a passion for Claude and Mary where they spent many happy hours and made many special friends.

Millbrook Baptist Church was also central to their lives. Claude served on so many church committees that it sometimes felt like he was on the staff. Giving back to his church and community was an important value he taught to his children along with the importance of doing our very best in all aspects of our lives and being lifelong learners.

A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, February 11, 2017 at 2:00pm at Millbrook Baptist Church, with a reception to follow. Rev. Dr. Andrea Dellinger Jones and Rev. Dr. William H. Puckett, Jr. will officiate at the ceremony. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Claude's life. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Millbrook Baptist Church's Grounds Committee to be used for the gardens at 1519 E. Millbrook Rd. Raleigh, NC 27609 or the JC Raulston Arboretum at 4415 Beryl Rd Raleigh, NC 27606. The family would like to thank Transition Hospice and the caregivers with Nurse Care. We are also grateful for two very special caregivers Joyce and Grace for all the care, love and attention they gave our Dad and Mom through this transition.
