Mary was the daughter of Townsend and Margaret (Moore) Cresse. Her sibings were James, Rachel, Daniel Townsend, Ruth (married Thomas Ellwood Shaw) and Wilson (married Lucy Cox) Cresse.
She married Jesse W. Bennett Nov. 6, 1873 in Tippecanoe County, Indiana. They had four children, Nellie, Alice (married Jesse Williams), Edward Morton (married Emma Elizabeth Howell) and Samuel Wilson (married Elizabeth Nancy Drake) Bennett.

The death of Mrs. Mary (Cresse) Bennett took place Thursday night at 11 o'clock in her home one mile west of Nevada, after a long illness of cancer of the stomach. for the past year she has been in failing health, and since last December she has been confined to her bed. She had reached the age of 78 years and for twenty years had been a resident of the vicinity of her late home. The funeral will be held Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock in the Methodist church in Nevada, of which the deceased had been a member since 1900. The services will be conducted by Rev. J.C. Balentine of Fairmount, after which the body will be taken to the Sharpsville cemetery for burial. Mrs. Bennett was a daughter of Townsend Cresse and wife and was born in Tippecanoe county near Lafayette. Of six sons and daughters in her father's family she was the last to pass away. She was united in marriage to Jesse W. Bennett in 1873 and the husband preceded her to the grave. They were the parents of four children, one dying in infancy, leaving a daughter and two sons to mourn the mother's death, as follows: Mrs. Jessie Williams, with whom the mother resided, Edward and Wilson Bennett, both living near Nevada.
