He married Margaret Moore March 23, 1836. Their children were James, Rachel, Mary F. (married Jesse W. Bennett), Daniel Townsend (married Martha Bender), Ruth (married Thomas Ellwood Shaw) and Wilson (married Lucy Cox) Cresse.

After Margaret's death, Townsend married Mary A. Fairman .
