Kenneth James Steenson, 80, died Dec 8, 2007, from cardiac arrest at his home in Canby.

Kenneth began life Feb. 15, 1927, as the eighth child born to Roy and Maggie Steenson in Marysville, Kan. His passion for farming and animals led to his first job working on a farm when he was only 8-years old. He was proud that at that young age he was able to care for the plow horses, hook up a team, and plow a field on his own.

The Steenson family moved to Boring in 1938. Kenneth, also known as "Jim", did well at Sandy High School. He was active in clubs such as FFA, JCC, and Crimson. He loved sports, playing four years of football, basketball, and baseball and often serving in leadership roles as team captain, class president, and president of the student body. After graduation in 1945 Kenneth enlisted and served four years in the Army Air Force.

He settled in Prineville in 1950, worked at a lumber mill and farmed with his brother, Raymond. He married Georgie Rose Solberg on July 20, 1950, and they had three children, Theresa "Teri", Phillip, and Debra. Kenneth's love for his children exceeded even his love of animals; he was seldom seen without a child and or animal in tow. In 1957 Kenneth relocated his family to Portland where he owned and operated Steenson's Richfield Station on McLoughlin Boulevard and played city league basketball in the evenings with his brother, Bob. Kenneth was a committed and loving dad spending time with his children and grandchildren working on projects, taking them to work, swimming, boating, water skiing, snow mobiling, bowling, hunting, gardening, renovating cars, and playing games. However, his favorite game was pinochle with his three brothers and in that one game, kids were not allowed. In 1967 Kenneth relocated back to Prineville to return to his first love - farming, but returned to small business ownership in Portland and Estacada from 1972 to 1991 when he semi-retired. He and Georgie enjoyed some snowbirding to Arizona while he continued to work part-time as a bus driver at the airport and for David Douglas School District. Kenneth returned to full-time work in 1999 for Goodwill Industries until full retirement in 2006. In 2004 Kenneth and Georgie moved to a farm in Canby where they live on acreage alongside their grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Kenneth spent his final years joyfully caring for great-grandchildren and animals, and once again doing farm chores.

He is survived by his wife, Georgie; daughter and son-in-law, Teri and Sam Johnston of Salem; son and daughter-in-law, Phillip and Rita Steenson of Sandy, Utah; daughter, Debra Gartner of Gresham; grandchildren, Chris and Kenny Youngren of Canby, Amy and Eric Sidwell of Medford, and Erik and Amy Steenson of Draper, Utah; great-grandchildren, Amber and Makenna Youngren of Canby, and Kaylee and Addyn Steenson of Draper, Utah; sister and brother-in-law, Polly and Virgil Nelson of Estacada; sister, Ann Hatloy of Gresham; brother-in-law and wife, Barney and Shirley Child of Woodburn; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

His life will be celebrated at 12 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 15, 2007, at Rural Dell Elementary School, 10500 Highway 211, Molalla.
