Olaf Buer 1914-1999

Olaf Ingvald Buer, 85, of Gonvick, died Thursday, September 16, 1999 at the Clearwater County Memorial Hospital in Bagley.
He was born February 23, 1914 at Eden Township, Polk County, the son of Ole and Inga Buer. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and lived in several places near Gully. During his younger years, he enjoyed taxidermy, trapping and raising sheep. He worked on farms in North Dakota and was a lumberjack in the big woods of Minnesota. In 1942, he entered the U.S. Army. On August 14, 1943 while on furlough, he was united in marriage to Zona Granley. The spent a year at the Aberdeen, Maryland Proving Grounds until Olaf was shipped overseas to the Philippine Islands. He was discharged in December of 1945. In 1946 he purchased a farm east of Gonvick where he farmed until recent years.
Olaf was a member of the Samhold Lutheran Church and a charter member of the Lake Itasca Region Farmers Inc. Olaf had numerous interests including raising flowers, gardening, photography, visiting and speaking Norwegian with family and friends, playing scrabble, and being with his puppy, Butch. He played the button accordion and loved old time music and hymns.
Survivors include his wife, Zona; two sons, Franklin (Margie) and Paul; two daughters, Mary Sather and Sonjia Buer; three grandchildren; one great grandson; three sisters, Ann Goldbloom, Sylvia Carlson and Ellen Wood; two brothers, Lawrenve and Wilfred Buer, all of Gonvick.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Peter and Manley; two infant sisters, and a son in law, Paul Sather.
Funeral services were Monday, September 20 at the Samhold Lutheran Church in Gonvick with Rev. Eric Midthun officiating. Interment was at the Samhold Lutheran Cemetery in Gonvick with a flag presentation by the Gonvick American Legion Post. Arrangements were by the Cease Family Funeral Home of Bagley.
