Rueben Ashmun was born to Justus Ashmun and Keziah (Moss/Morse) Ashmun on May 23, 1781, in Blandford, MA, where his father owned the Corner Tavern (see Justus Ashmun's memorial for more details). In 1805, he moved to Russell, St. Lawrence Co., NY, a settlement which was founded by a Blandford resident and family friend named Russell Atwater. Reuben was appointed county surveyor. On January 1, 1806, he married Huldah Upson, daughter of John and Lois (Atwater) Ashmun of Blandford. Rueben and Huldah lived in Russell, NY, for almost 30 years. About 1833, they moved to Tallmadge, Ohio (source: Bronson Diary).

- William Bowen Ashmun (1815-1896) - m. Sarah Edwards Fenn
- Dr. George Parish Ashmun (1818-1873) m. Lydia Wright

Note: Three of their children (Russell, Helen, and George) married three siblings from the Wright family (children of Dr. Amos Wright and Lydia A. Kenne).
