Wife of Samuel, they married Feb 1, 1795 in Blandford, MA.

Some records list her first name as Anness, like her headstone. Other spellings can also be found, including Aness (as found in personal records and signature), Anna, and Agnes.

She was born Nov. 2, 1772, to Justus and Keziah (Moss/Morse) Ashmun while they were living in Fort Edward, New York. The family moved to Blandford, MA, in 1777 during the American Revolution. Her father owned a tavern in Blandford and held various positions in town (follow link to his memorial). Two of Anness' brothers became lawyers, one of whom (Eli Ashmun) served in the US Senate representing Massachusetts. (source: Taverns and Turnpikes of Blandford by Sumner Gilbert Wood, 1908). It is probable that Anness is a distant cousin of Jehudi Ashmun (1794 -1828), a missionary who helped to found the country of Liberia. He is also buried in Grove Street Cemetery.

In Feb. 1795 in Blandford, she married Samuel Haughton, who was a cabinet maker and case maker for clocks in New Haven. Their children, all born in New Haven, are as follows:
- William Ashmun Haughton (1796-1860), married first Eliza, second Mary D. Ashby
- Solomon Lathrop Haughton (1798-1819), died as a single young man. His middle name is likely in honor of his father's business partner.
- Frances Haughton (1801-1808), died young
- Jane Porter Haughton (1804-1892), third wife of William S. Jarman, Jr. Her middle name honors Anness' paternal grandmother, Martha (Porter) Ashmun.
- Amelia Haughton (1806-1831), died as a young, single woman.
- Mary Ann Haughton (1808-1836), married James Morrell
- Frances Haughton (1811-1837). She was the second daughter they named Frances. She was the first wife of William S. Jarman, Jr.

In 1806, Anness became a member of a church in New Haven called the Fair Haven Society. Church records show she died in 1814 when she was 42. Her age at time of death matches family record that she was born Nov. 2, 1772.

Note: One version of the Hale Collection of Cemetery Inscriptions on Ancestry.com incorrectly states that Anness died in 1811 instead of the correct year of 1814. This is likely because her gravestone had deteriorated by the time the WPA workers, at Charles R. Hale's direction, took inventory of the cemetery around 1932.

Samuel died in 1812, two years before Anness. Their children, all minors except William, may have gone to live with Anness' sister Olivia (Ashmun) Sherman, who also lived in New Haven. Olivia's husband William Sherman is listed in the Hartford probate records as a guardian for the Haughton children (Ancestry.com). When he died in 1821, Timothy Dwight became a guardian. Note: Their guardian records are not indexed. To view them, first go to Anness Haughton's probate record, which is indexed, then scroll manually to the section before it. There are over 20 pages of guardian records, including some of the expenses, for the Haughton children.
