Olivia was the daughter of Justus Ashman and Keziah (Moss/Morse) Ashmun of Blandford, MA. Justus owned a tavern, farmed and held various positions in town (see link to his memorial). Olivia's brother Eli served as a U.S. Senator, representing Massachusetts. Olivia's nephew George (son of Eli) served in congress and was a friend of Abraham Lincoln.
Olivia married William Sherman of New Haven, CT, in 1805. It is possible she met him through her sister Aness (Ashmun) Haughton, who several years earlier had married a New Haven man (Samuel Haughton) and moved there.
