In the 1750s, Justus served in the Connecticut military and fought in the French & Indian War in upstate New York, as did his brothers Elnathan and Amaziah. (source: CT military records). Justus settled in the Fort Edward area of Washington County/Saratoga area of New York. He married Keziah Moss (aka Morse) of Kingsbury, NY, on Feb. 8, 1766 according to a family record. He bought property in Queensbury, NY, in 1773. Keziah was the daughter of Isaac Moss and Anna Roberts as stated in the family records. Both of her parents were from Wallingford, CT. The Moss/Morse family moved to New Milford, CT, and then to Kingsbury, NY, where Keziah likely met Justus.
About 1777, Justus and his family fled to Blandford, MA, ahead of General Burgoyne's British troops invading New York. In Blandford, Justus bought the Corner Tavern and became a prominent citizen of that town. He served as a selectman and justice of the peace. He served in Captain Sloper's 12th Company and Colonel David Mosley's 3rd Hampshire County Regiment during the Revolutionary War. In 1779, he served as a delegate to the Concord Convention in Concord, MA, which put a stop to the depreciation of the currency. Source for his time in Blandford can be found in "Taverns and Turnpikes of Blandford" by Sumner Gilbert Wood, 1908.
Justus died on June 15, 1799, leaving Keziah with two minor children: Orpha under 12 and Justus, Jr. under 11. In 1807 Keziah moved to Northampton to live with her son Eli and his family. She died in that town in 1825 (according to a notice in the Greenfield, MA, newspaper). She is likely buried there but no gravestone or deed record has been found. Note: Justus and Keziah were the parents of a U.S. Senator Eli Porter Ashmun and the grandparents of a U.S. Congressman George Ashmun (son of Eli) of Springfield, MA, who was a close friend of Abraham Lincoln.
