David Baum was the third of ten known children of Daniel Baum Sr. (1780-1857) and Ascenith (seen as Asenath frequently) Meyers Rothrock Baum (1781-1870), who married 20 Feb 1801 at Mifflin County, Pennsylvania.

David married Eliza Green (1809-1881) on 10 Sep 1829 at Deer Creek Township, Carroll County, Indiana. David was a farmer. David and Eliza were the parents of eight known children, namely:

1. John Lee Baum (1830-1912)
2. Darius Baum (1832-1859)
3. Martha Baum Cochran (1835-1898)
4. Mary Baum (1836-1836)
5. George Washington Baum (1838-1907)
6. Amanda Baum Martin (1841-1925)
7. Jasper N. Baum (1843-1870)
8. Delilah Ann Baum Conklin (1846-1884)
