Joseph Rex Sutherland, 84, died February 21, 1977, at his home after a long illness.
Born August 13, 1890, Mill Creek, Salt Lake County, to Joseph Brigham and Ceceila Samuels Sutherland. Married Bertha Andrus January 21, 1914. She died November 8, 1966. Member LDS church. Graduate Granite High School, 1909. Graduate University of Utah, where he was well-known as an athlete in football, being called by his teammates and friends "Shifty" Sutherland. In September 1921 he received contract as athletic coach for Granite High School, a position he held until retiring in 1951. Served many years as foreman, Utah Copper Company, Garfield, Utah. Engineering foreman, State Road Commission until retiring June 30 1962.
Survivors; daughters, La Rue s. Holman; Lorraine S. Bradshaw; Marjorie S. Jensen, all Salt Lake City; nine grandchildren; fourteen great grandchildren; brother, E. Kenneth Sutherland; sisters, Mrs. Franklin N. (Estella) Fisher; Mrs. Harold (Vera) Bennion, all Salt Lake City.
Interment Elysian Burial Gardens.
