"DAVID ALEXANDER, LIFETIME RESIDENT OF G.I., DIES"
David W. Alexander, a retired machinist for the Union Pacific Railroad and a lifetime resident of Grand Island, died Saturday noon in a local hospital. He had been seriously ill the last five days. The family home is at 310 E. First.
Funeral rites will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the chapel of the Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home. The Rev. David McMahill and the Rev. Volney Lofgreen will officiate. Interment will be in Grand Island Cemetery.
He was born in this city to James and Isabelle Ritchie Alexander and attended school and grew to manhood in Grand Island. As a young man, he began work with the Union Pacific Railroad. He attended the Union Pacific's Machinist School at Cheyenne, Wyo., then began work in the local shops. For many years, he was an inspector in the local shops. He retired in 1956.
Mr. Alexander was a member of the United Congregational Church. He was affiliated with Aerie No. 378 of the Fraternal Order of Eagles and with the Old Timers Club No. 16.
He and Bertha Bivens were married May 17, 1922, at Sterling, Colo. They had made their only home in Grand Island.
Mr. Alexander is survived by his wife, Bertha; one daughter, Mrs. Dolores Biess of Chicago, Ill.; six grandchildren and two great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, Glen; his parents; three brothers, James, Joe and John Alexander; and two sisters, Mrs Isabelle Gillespie and Mrs Agnes Hamilton."
Pallbearers were Donald Haggart, David Alexander, Robert Brown, David Brown, Ray Alexander and Ronald Brown.
