John Witt / Dewitt
1758 – 1820
Nancy Elizabeth Culbertson
1770 – 1841
As of December 2013, current DNA based research on this family has proven that this family descends from the Witt family of Massachusetts. Claims of descendancy from NY Dutch DeWitt or Virginia DeWitt families has also been proven incorrect.
Thomas' father John Witt/Dewitt arrived in what is known as Muses Bottom, Jackson County, WV (then Mason Co, VA) in 1807. The family remained on that property, later expanded to over 100 acres, downriver from Murraysville, and upriver from Ravenswood, WV through about 1924. (See attached maps.) On that property was created a cemetery to which this memorial is connected.
Thomas' gravestone shows that he died 3/16/1879, age 90y, but the Jackson County, WV Death Register shows Thomas Dewitt died 3/12/1879, 88 years, d Muses Bottom.
Reference
Another long term DeWitt family historian Betty Briggs thinks that it may have taken two years to produce his impressive tombstone and the dates may have gotten mixed up.
If this is true, then Thomas would have been born in mid to late 1791 which makes sense since his father John was listed with no children in the Westmoreland Co, PA 1790 census which was collected on 14 Apr 1791!
NOTE1:
There is another grave site listed for Thomas. I have not been able to make contact with the person who listed Thomas so I have added him again so that I can add accurate and current information about him and his family.
NOTE2: There are several more photos and maps uploaded to this memorial. They may be accessed via the link found below the bottom image on this page. Click on "Click here to view all images..."
Thomas was married to Magdalene Buffington (1797-~1886). Magdalena's parents were Joel Buffington and Elizaeth Logan. We do not know where she was buried. She died in Murraysville, Jackson Co, WV which is a few miles from this cemetery so she may have been buried with her husband without any marker. Actually she my have simply passed in her home which was built on the land surrounding this cemetery. Sometimes the farm was claimed to be in the Muses Bottom postal/polling area or Murraysville.
Thomas is recorded having received a Virginia Land Grant in 1844 for 105 acres at Muses Bottom. It is assumed it was the land which surrounded this cemetery which is on the north end of Muses Bottom along the Ohio River on the WV side.
Magdalene and Thomas's children were:
