Alexander was the son of John Dewitt and Nancy Culbertson.

He was probably born in Wood County because his father paid Personal Property Tax in Wood County in 1804 for the previous year. In 1807 the family moved to the region along the Ohio River between what is now Muses Bottom and Murraysville to the north. At that time it was Mason County but is now Jackson County. This cemetery is located on the family lands owned by members of the family through the 1920s.

Alexander's middle name was probably Culbertson based on his mother's maiden name but no documentation has been found.

According to the recording of the inscriptions in this cemetery in 1960 by Sue Proctor Miller the inscription on his grave stone was:

"Alexander C. Dewitt departed this life on Feb. 19, 1823 (or 25) in the 20th year of his age"

Several gravestones were destroyed then when the nearby quarry decided to blast away rocks in the area so his marker may no longer be evident.

There is no record of his marriage.
