Nancy was the first child of Thomas DeWitt (1791-1879) and Mary Magdalena Buffington (1797–1886). Her parents were living in the Muses Bottom area of what is now Jackson county, WV. At the time it was Mason County, Virginia. She was probably named after her paternal grandmother Nancy Elizabeth Culbertson.

She married Simon Lauck on 30 Dec 1835 in Jackson county, (W)VA. Two dates have been reported. The other was the 27th so that may have been the date of their license?
