Sadie was just a toddler when she accompanied her parents and older brother to the Dakota Territory. After she had completed her secondary education, she attended the University at Grand Forks and then took a teaching job. When her parents and the three youngest siblings moved to Montana in November of 1903, she and her next younger sister, Alice, stayed behind to finish teaching the school year before joining the rest of the family the following spring.

Living about three miles from the Gilbert ranch were the Pepper brothers, who were from Missouri. Walker Pepper was teaching school at Cottonwood Creek and his brother, James, carried on the farm work. Sadie and James became acquainted and were married on November 29, 1905 in her parents' home.

James and Sadie moved northeast of Wilsall and ranched in the Porcupine area. They eventually purchased a home just outside Wilsall on the Horse Creek Road. In their retirement years, they lived in Sun City, Arizona, until their deaths.

James and Sadie Pepper were the parents of two children:

1. James "Everett" Pepper (1908-1943)
2. Verna Marie Pepper Pulis (1910-1999)
