Adam came to Stephenson County with his parents in 1840. In 1852 he purchased part of his father's land, made improvements and farmed there until retiring in 1880 when he rented it on shares to his son William. He served as a school director for 25 years and also various terms as road commissioner, tax collector and assessor. He was one of the organizers of the Republican Party in Stephenson Co. in 1856. He also was an elder, deacon and trustee for the church at Rock Grove.
