Following his marriage to Catharine Steese in 1817 John engaged in farming in Snyder Co. and Union Co. until 1840 when he and his brother Michael brought their families to Stephenson Co. He purchased 400 acres of land in Rock Grove Twp. where he farmed until 1859 when he turned the operation over to his son Levi.
He was a member of the Republican party and was one of the men who was chosen to escort Abraham Lincoln to the site of his famous debate with Stephen Douglas in Freeport.
Four children died in infancy in Pennsylvania, Caroline (1827), Daniel (1828), Susan (1830) & Henry (1833).
