John Bolender came with his parents to Stephenson Co. Illinois in 1840. As a young man he came to Monroe where he obtained a position as a clerk in a dry goods store. After gaining some experience he opened a grocery. He switched to dry goods in 1873 with his store located on the south side of the square. His business steadily expanded until he was one of the most prominent businessmen in town. He was one of the founders of the Citizens Bank and its president.
