Oliver Tiffany Ashbaugh

Birth: 06 MAR 1809 in Ancaster Twp., Wentworth Co. Ont.
Burial: DEC 1888 Highland Cem., Junction City, Kansas, USA
Death: 04 DEC 1888 in Junction City, Geary Co., Kansas, USA 1
Note:
Oliver Tiffany Ashbaugh was born in Ancaster Twp., Wentworth Co., Ontario, on the family homestead on Cootes Paradise. He was trained as a potter and farmer. He married Mary Jane Estey, in 1834, and lived on 28 acres in Windham Twp. Norfolk Co. It is believed that the acreage, owned by his father Frederick Oliver, was purchased to open a new pottery in Norfolk Co. When Oliver’s father, Frederick Oliver, died in 1840, the acreage was inherited by Oliver.
It is believed that Oliver and Mary Jane Estey had three children, Jane Adelaide b.1835, Anna Amelia b.1839, and Melinda Augusta b.1841. All three are included in this tree, but I am still seeking further proof of their relationship. Oliver’s main occupation was a potter. The Ashbaugh family bible notes Marry Jane Estey (Ashbaugh) died, 7 Oct 1844.
In 1851, the census report, which was actually taken in 1852, finds O. T. Ashbaugh living in Hamilton, St Mary district with a wife Hannah Kemp. The entry is a little strange in that it appears as if Oliver is living with a female, age 3, listed as H. Ashbaugh. Oliver is listed as married, but a wife is not listed and some entries have been scratched out by the census taker. The fact that Oliver is an adult is demonstrated when Oliver T. Ashbaugh signs the declaration on the bottom of the form declaring that all facts are accurate.
On 16 Jun 1839, while living in Windham Twp., Oliver wrote a letter to the Lieutenant Governor of Upper Canada requesting permission to purchase Lot 42, Con. 2, south side, Middleton Twp., as a school lot. The signature on this letter is similar enough to the signature on the census of 1852 to recognize they are the same person.
Hannah Ashbaugh is found in the Hamilton City Directory and in the 1861 Census living in Hamilton. She still used the surname Ashbaugh and she was listed as a widow. Her occupation was Dress Maker. Hannah died on 8 May 1872. The name on the death notice was Hannah Ashbaugh and she was scored as a widow.
In the 1851 census, Oliver’s daughter Jane Adelaide Ashbaugh was living with the Walter Bastedo family, a furrier, in the St Patrick district of Hamilton. In the 1861 census, Melinda Ashbaugh, is listed as “adopted child,” living with the Joseph Handcock family in Wentworth Co. The wife of Walter Bastedo was Catherine Hughson, (nee Filman), widow of Nathaniel Hughson. Nathaniel Hughson’s first wife was Hannah Ashbaugh b. 1803, d. 1831, the oldest sister of Oliver Tiffany Ashbaugh.
A source, referred to as the Agnes McCullough Papers, reports that, “Ann Amelia Ashbaugh from Long Point; daughter of Oliver Ashbaugh and M.J. Esty, married George Epps, 1 Jan 1862, at Hamilton.” I have not observed this citation first hand, however, I am familiar with the locations and on face value the citation may be accurate.
It appears, as soon as his children were cared for or taken in by other family members, Oliver Tiffany Ashbaugh migrated to Jo Daviess Co., Illinois. On 3 Feb 1859, he married Julia Ann Elizabeth Shea. By 1871, Oliver and Julia had eight children. Sometime during the next few years, Oliver moved his family, which included four remaining children, to Walker, Ellis Co. Kansas.
Oliver died in 1888 and is buried in Highland Cemetery, Junction City, Geary Co. Kansas. Julia died in 1898 and is buried in the same cemetery, as is his son and daughter-in-law, Joseph Oliver Ashbaugh d. 1925 and Myra B. Ashbaugh d. 1952.----researched by David R Ashbaugh.
