George was born in Freeport, Illinois where he lived with his parents, 3 brothers and 4 sisters. In 1865 the family moved to Kent, Illinois. Per the 1880 census, they had moved to Walker, Ellis County, Kansas. In 1880, George's twin sister Georgina died.
Next the family moved to Junction City, Kansas. George's father died in 1888.
In 1896 George was working as a fireman for the UPD & G Railroad in Denver, CO. By 1900 George had become an engineer for Union Pacific Railroad where he continued a life long career.
The 1930 census says that he was widowed. It is unknown at this time who he married. He has a possible son as evidenced by a family picture.
