Julia Ann Elizabeth Shea Ashbaugh was the daughter of John Shea and Catherine (possibly Sullivan) (She later has surname McDonald-not sure if maiden name or 2nd marriage name), Cork, Ireland. Julia immigrated to America from Cork, Ireland. Julia also had a sister Mary Shea who came to America. Mary appears on the 1870 census living with Julia's family. Catherine McDonald appears on the 1880 census living with Julia's family.

Julia's first husband was John Brown (1833-1860) of Ireland. They married in Charlestown, Massachusetts in 1853. They had a daughter Delia Brown born 21 Nov 1853. John Brown died of consumption in 1860 at the age of 28. He was a Hatter by trade. John Brown's parents were Michael and Bridgett Brown of Ireland. It is unknown what happened to Delia.

Julia married Oliver Tiffany Ashbaugh in Jo Daviess County, Illinois in 1859. Together they had 8 children: Joseph Oliver, John Oliver, Margret Josephine, Mary Carolyn, Georgana, George, Helen Worthington James and Frederick.
