A 37-year-old Twin Falls man died at Magic Valley Memorial hospital at 11:40 p.m. Saturday, after his neck was broken in an auto accident at 8 p.m. one mile north of Filer. Neal Dotson, 450 Wakefield street, was Twin Falls county's first traffic fatality during 1961, and the fourth for Magic Valley. His neck was broken when an International tractor-trailer hit Dotson's 1957 Chevrolet pickup truck on highway 30 approximately one mile north of Filer, investigators reported.
Driver of the truck was identified as William Velzy, 32, Indianapolis, Ind. Velzy was going north at approximately 40 miles an hour when Dotson apparently attempted to make a left turn from the highway to a side road, officers said.
The big truck struck the pickup on its right side, pushing the smaller vehicle approximately 48 feet sideways before both came to a halt on the highway.
The pickup truck was a total loss, according to officers. The tractor-trailer had approximately $600 damage to the front end.
When investigators arrived at the scene, Dotson was found hanging from the driver's door of his vehicle, only one leg remaining inside the truck. His head lay limply to one side and he moaned as ambulance attendants placed him inside an emergency vehicle to rush him to the hospital.
State Patrolman James Gerke, who investigated, said the investigation continues. Twin Falls county deputy Sheriff Clarence Yingst and State Patrolman S. D. Lueckert assisted at the scene.
