Mary Elizabeth [Pierce] Snuffin was born in Benton County, Iowa to Franklin and Matilda [Hollenbeck] Pierce] were farmer[s] and miller[s], who in 1852 started for the plains with ox teams, bringing [their] family to Oregon, where [they] arrived on the 1st of November 1852, after traveling for six months over prairie and arid plain and through the mountain passes until the valleys of the Pacific slope were reached.

The family remained in Portland through the following winter and as times were very hard the children sold pies which their mother made and split and sold pitch wood [for starting fires] in order to meet the necessary expenses.

In the spring, Mr. Pierce took up a donation claim on [the] Clackamas River in Clackamas County, now Estacada, securing 320 acres of rich [farm] land, on which he built a long house. There were no improvements upon the place .....and much timber had to be cleared away before fields could be cultivated. There were at the time three children in the family and four others were added...while they occupied the [homestead].

In Oregon, on the 18th of January 1862, their second daughter, Mary Elizabeth, gave her hand in marriage to Benjamin F. Snuffin. Their union was blessed with seven children. She is now his widow. The death of Mr. Snuffin occured, October 22, 1904.
