Franklin [Frank] Pierce was is also known as Benjamin Franklin Pierce and Franklin Pearce. They are all the same person. No one knows why he changed the spelling of his surname about, 1853.

[Franklin and Matilda [Hollenbeck] Pierce] were farmer[s] and miller[s], who in 1852 started for the plains with ox teams, bringing [their] family to Oregon, where [they] arrived on the 01 November 1852, after traveling for six months over prairie and arid plain and through the mountain passes until the valleys of the Pacific slope were reached.

The family remained in Portland through the following winter and as times were very hard the children sold pies which their mother made and split and sold pitch wood [for starting fires] in order to meet the necessary expenses.

In the spring, Mr. Pierce took up Oregon Donation Land Claim, No. 1756 on [the] Clackamas River in Clackamas County, now Estacada, securing 320 acres of rich [farm] land, on which he built a log house. There were no improvements upon the place .....and much timber had to be cleared away before fields could be cultivated. There were at the time three children in the family and four others were added...while they occupied the [homestead]. (1st) Sarah, the eldest of the family, is the widow of John Palmateer. (2nd) Mary Elizabeth was born in Benton County, Iowa. In Oregon, on the 18th of January 1862, she gave herself in marriage to Benjamin F. Snuffin. Their union was blessed with seven children. She is now his widow. Mr. Snuffin's birth occured, March 4, 1830, upon a little farm in the midst of the undeveloped forest region of Champaign County, Ohio. His parents were Joseph and Martha Snuffin, who came of Quaker ancestry. (3rd) Eliza C. was born in Benton County, Iowa and died 18 July 1878 and buried in Mount Zion Cemetery, Estacada, Oregon. She was the wife of Orrin H. Price, of Granger, New York [born abt.1843]. They were married on 15 March 1866, in Clackamas Co., Oregon. He served in Civil War with 36th Illinois Infantry. The 1870 Federal Census for Eagle Creek, Clackamas, Oregon has the Price and Pierce families entry's next to each other. The Price's had two daughters: Ella - 3 years and Emma- 1 year old with Eliza (20) and Orrin (27). The 1880 U. S. Census added two more children Frank D.- 8 years, May 1873 and Ruth Price- 4 years old. (4th) Martha Jane was born in Clackamas Co., Oregon Territory on 22 Oct 1854, married Robert Bruce, who has passed away. (5th) Maria Jane born in Clackamas Co., Oregon Territory on 22 Oct 1854, twin sister of Martha Jane [Jennie]. Maria Jane became the wife of William Livermore, [died in Portland on 03/05 Jan 1906] now deceased in Lone Fir Cemetery, Portland. Martha Jane first married to Darman T. Beals on 13 May 1871, Clark Co., Washington. Then on 30 Nov 1891 she was married to Robert W. Bruce in Clark Co., Washington. The (6th) member of the family a son died in infancy, and (7th) Margaret was born in Oregon State in 1857, the youngest, became the wife of, James Barger.

[Their] parents, {Franklin and Matilda [Hollenbeck] Pierce} lived upon the old home place until a few years prior to Frank's death, when they purchased property in Portland at the corner of Eleventh and Stephens streets and retired from active business. There he and his wife spent their remaining days in well earned rest.

Matilda was a most active and devoted member of the Methodist church for more than a half century.
