Ethel Breeding Coleman, age 91, died Tuesday, May 26, 1998 in the Collingsworth General Hospital, Wellington.

Funeral services will be held at 2 pm on Saturday, May 30, 1998 at the Bowie Street Church of Christ. Church of Christ ministers Gaylord Cook of Dalhart; Haun Kite of Amarillo and Tom Anderson of Memphis, will officiate at the services. Burial will be in the Coleman family plot, North Fairview Cemetery, Wellington, under the direction of Adams Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be Kyle Coleman, Richard M. Sims, Randall C. Sims,Ralph Owens,Carroll Nunnelley, Mack Saied, Bill Hatch and Hurshel Tyler. Honorary Pallbearers will consist of any member of the American Legion, Boys and Girls State and members of the Attorney General's Youth Conference in this area. Also serving will be coaches and workers of the Kids-Baseball program that was formed in the early 1960's. Mrs Coleman served as finance chairman of this organization for 15 years. During this time she encouragd the city to take part in this needed project.

Ethel Breeding, was born to W. W. and Mattie Shirley Breeding on October. 11, 1907 in McLean-Enterprise. She graduated from McLean High School before attending WTSU. For more than 100 years her Abra, Texas farm has been in the Breeding family and is adjacent to the site used for the filming of the movie "Abilene". She and John Coleman were married in the Breeding family home on September 2, 1928.

Known to Texas Legislators for three decades from the 1960's through 1980's, Mrs. Coleman had the distinction of being the first woman elected to Channing Public School Board in 1939 before returning to Wellington in September, 1941 when her reserve officer husband, John Coleman,was called to active duty assigned to P. I.

In the 1960's she served her community as Wellington Mayor pro tempore and City Judge while a councilman. She was active in the American Legion Auxiliary at local, disrict and state department levels. She was part of Girls State events as well as an Attorney General's Youth Conference state board member and sponsor. Mrs Coleman was a state board member, named Outstanding Clubwoman, Top of Texas and Texas Federation of Women's Clubs; a member of the Texas Business Professional Women's Club, District 10 Director, Wellington BPW President, Service Award. In 1979 Mrs Coleman was named to the Texas Panhandle Distinguished Volunteer Award WTSU. Serving the Texas Democratic Party, she was an appointee by Governors Connelley, Smith and Lt. Governor Hobby; as Regional Chairman. Mrs Coleman was a dedicated leader whose skills were shared throughout the Texas Panhandle and the rest of the state in ways that were recognized by Texas Governors and by United States President Lyndon B. Johnson.

Survivors include her husband of 70 years, (Ret)Mayor John Coleman; a son and his wife, Spencer D. and Beatrice H. Coleman of Fort Worh; a daughter and her husband, Lennie C. and Billy Mac Sims of Wellington; also three grandsons, Kyle S. Coleman of London and Fort Worth; Richard M. and Jane Sims and Randall C. and Lois Sims of Wellington; two granddaughters and their husbands, Kelley Coleman and Jack Sheehan of Pennsylvania and Karey Coleman and Dr. Hank Hayes of Sulphur Springs and great-grandchildren, Jarod, Cody and Grant Sheehan; Melissa and Leah Kay Hayes, and Nicole, McKenna, Scott and Sawyer Sims of Wellington.
