He married Catherine H. "Katie" Walter on July 20, 1937, in Hays.
He was a parts man and mechanic for O'Loughlin Motors, Lundgren Chevrolet and James Motor Co. prior to his retirement.
Survivors include his wife, of the home; four sons, Wayne, Fort Worth, Texas, Gerald, Lenexa, Richard, Laramie, Wyo., and Robert, Topeka; three daughters, Elaine Leikam, Centennial, Colo., Anita Heble, West Columbia, Texas, and Rita Billinger, Goodland; four brothers, Cyril, Jerome, and Marion Schmidt, all of Hays, and Donald Schmidt, Wichita; four sisters, Loretta Joy, Temple, Texas, Cecilia Quint and Mary Schmidt, both of Wichita, and Helen Edmunds, Grosse, Mich.; 23 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Myra Arpin Schmidt, three brothers: Alphonse, Edwin, and Vincent Schmidt, and a sister, Lidwina Schreiner.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Hays; burial in St. Joseph Cemetery, Hays. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday and from 8:30 to 9:45 a.m. Saturday at Brock's North Hill Chapel, 2509 Vine. There will be a parish vigil service at 7 p.m. followed by a family rosary, both Friday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the Lex and Katie Schmidt Endowment For Faculty and Staff Development fund at Thomas More Prep-Marian High School in Hays.
