Mary Lou Schmidt, 87, Hays, died Sunday, May 22, 2016, at Rush County Nursing Home, LaCrosse. She was born Jan. 18, 1929, in Hays to Paul and Catherine (Walter) Schmidt.

She was a 1947 graduate of Girls Catholic High School and earned a master's degree in English from Fort Hays State University. She was a commercial and residential real estate broker. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Hays. She enjoyed tennis, traveling, reading, writing poetry and talking politics.

Survivors include two brothers, Marion Schmidt and wife, Donna, Hays, and Donald Schmidt and wife, Rose, Arizona; a sister, Helen Edmonds, Michigan; three grandchildren, Erika Noone and husband, Bryan, Hays, Jennifer Haselhorst and fiance, Chris Sida, Kansas City, Mo., and Meaghan Haselhorst, Denver; and four great-grandchildren, Morgan, Kian, Logan and Ava.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Jacqueline Chamoff; a son, Brad Rupp; five brothers, Edwin, Alexius, Vincent, Cyril and Jerome Schmidt; and three sisters, Lydia Schreiner, Cecilia Pfeifer and Loretta Joy.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Hays; inurnment in the church cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to the wishes of the family to be determined at a later date. Brock's-Keithley Funeral Chapel and Crematory 2509 Vine, Hays, KS 67601, is in charge of arrangements.
