MURRAY—John William Caldwell, 81, former Murray chief of police and Murray fireman, died at his residence. 4587 Bullock st., Murray, Sunday at 4:45 p.m. of causes incident to Age.

Mr. Caldwell was one of the organizers of the fire department in Murray and was a fireman for 45 years, retiring in 1940. Until the time of his death he was an active member of the State Firemens Assn.

Chief of police in Murray for 20 years, he had served on the force for 33 years and retired in 1930.

Born Oct. 18. 1869, in Newcastle, Va., he was a son of Robert H. and Cemantha Snodgrass Caldwell. He moved to Murray in 1893.

On Dec. 3. 1896, he married Alice Jane Osbourn. She died in February, 1918. He married Retta Gibson in August, 1919 in Salt Lake City.

Survivors include his widow; five sons, Robert. L., Ernest E., Ivan V., and Arthur M. Caldwell, all of Murray: William A. Caldwell, Vacaville, Cal.; a daughter. Mrs Olive Monteer, Murray: four step sons and daughters: Mrs. Pearl Miney, Oakland; Mrs. Beth Olson, Mrs. Cleo Firmage and Clyde Ashton, all of Salt Lake City: three brothers, A. B. Caldwell, Murray; Charles E. Caldwell, Arrowsmith, Ill.; Robert W. Caldwell, Union, Mo.; two sisters, Miss Maggie F. Caldwell and Mrs. Nannie M. Abbott, New Castle. Va., 31 grandchildren and 58 great-grandchildren.
