"The LaFayette Sun" - July 10, 1901:

Mr. Jake Burton Dead.

At his home two miles south of town on last Sunday night the spirit of "Uncle Jake" Burton winged its flight into the great beyond. For some years this gentleman had been an intense sufferer from cancerous affection, but he was with it all of a happy and jovial disposition. At the time of his death he was 73 years of age, and only about three years ago he and his wife celebrated their golden wedding. The Burton family has been severely afflicted recently, this making the third brother who has died within the past two months. In May, Mr. S. W. Burton died in Texas and Mr. W. H. Burton at his home in Tallapoosa County in June.
"Uncle Jake" was a good citizen and was highly respected by all. He was a unique character, holding faithfully to certain odd views of Bible doctrine that marked him as a thinker. He was a close student of the Bible.
The burial took place from his home Monday afternoon at four o'clock, conducted by Rev. C. J. Burden, assisted by Dr. J. L. Thompson and Rev. W. E. Faust. A large number of friends from over the county and from town were in attendance. Peace to his ashes.
