Married Rachel Scroggs, the sister of Rev. Joseph Scroggs, and said to be living in poverty for 3 years as a preacher in Mercer county, PA just prior to coming back to Ohio, where he had been licensed to preach in 1809. He filed the plat of New Athens, Ohio in 1814. With Rev. Joseph Scroggs, preached to the Unity congregation before becoming their pastor in 1815, where he remained for 31 years. Founder of Alma College, New Athens in 1818, later renamed Franklin College in 1825. Noted abolitionist, pioneer in the temperance movement, and opposed to Free Masonry. It was also written that he maintained an underground railroad station at his home in Unity. Following the death of his wife, Rachel, John married Elizabeth Morrow, and fathered 3 daughters of that marriage.

(NOTE - Some websites state John served as a Private in the War of 1812 from Jefferson county, Ohio, but it appears it was an entirely different John Walker; see John Walker #67546392, buried in Union cemetery, not Unity cemetery, in nearby Jefferson county. That John Walker married Sarah Abrahams there in 1809, and purchased public land in Jefferson county in 1812.)
