Daughter of Rev. John Walker and his second wife, Elizabeth Morrow. Rev. Walker was the founder of New Athens, Ohio, and established Alma College, later renamed Franklin College there. She was baptized 16 May 1839 at Unity church, Belmont county, Ohio, where her father was pastor from 1814 to 1845. Emma was only five years of age when her father died.

In 1855, Emma's mother remarried to William Nash at Xenia, Greene County, Ohio. William was in Ohio attending a Presbyterian church synod, and returned to Warren county with his new bride and four step-daughters, including Emma, who was 15 years old at the time.

Emma married Isaac McGill Kirkpatrick in Warren County on 9 September 1857. No known children were born to the marriage. However, they raised her nephew, James Walker Gordon, the only child of her sister, Mrs. Jemima Gordon, who died hours after James' birth.
