Daughter of Rev. John Walker and his second wife, Elizabeth Morrow. Rev. Walker was the founder of New Athens, Ohio, and established Alma College there, later renamed Franklin College. Sarah was only 4 years of age when her father died.

In 1855, Sarah's mother remarried to William Nash at Xenia, Greene County, Ohio. William was in Ohio attending a Presbyterian church synod, and returned to Warren county with his new bride and four step-daughters, including Sarah, who was 14 years old at the time.

Sarah married James Lorimer Findley in Warren county on 1 February 1860. Together, they were the parent of five children. Sarah preceded her husband in death.
