Daughter of Rev. John Walker and his first wife, Rachel Scroggs. Rev. Walker was a noted Presbyterian minister, famed abolitionist, founder of New Athens, Ohio, and Alma College (later renamed Franklin College). Eleanor was about 14 years old when her mother died, and her father remarried to Elizabeth Morrow. Eleanor's father then died when she was about 20 years old.

Eleanor was about 30 years of age when her step-mother married William Nash during 1855 in Xenia, Greene County, Ohio. William had been in Ohio on church business, just months after the death of his second wife. He returned to Warren county with his new bride and four step-daughters, including Eleanor.

Eleanor taught school in Monmouth, and resided with the widow Townley for many years. Eleanor was survived by her half-sister and niece, Mrs. J. L. (Sarah) Findley and Mary; her nephew Rev. S. A. Vincent, of Siloam Springs, Arkansas; and the son of her deceased half-sister Jemima, James Walker Gordon, of Henderson county.
