Grandma Flossie was an amazing lady! When she was between 7 and 8 yrs old her family moved from Illinois to Ste. Genevieve, MO. They crossed the Mississippi River on a barge with all their belongings.

Flossie Jane was the oldest girl out of 12 kids. Her parents depended on her heavily to help take care of her younger siblings. When she wasn't taking care of her siblings she was out working on the farm.

Grandma was 21 yrs old when she married my grandfather, William Laster who was from New Madrid, MO., they married on January 16, 1932 in Sikeston, Missouri. Grandma and grandpa had 7 children. My dad was 3rd to the oldest. Grandpa worked for the Lime Kiln in Ste. Genevieve until my dad was in the 3rd grade. He was a union man and implemented the union at the Lime Kiln. In 1947 the family moved to Washington State. My grandfather had received a job offer to start the Union Safety Committee at the Kaiser Aluminum Co. plant there. In 1953 they left Washington and moved to California and lived there until my grandfather passed away.

My grandfather passed away in 1982. A couple years later grandma Flossie moved back to Missouri to be closer to her brothers and sisters. She met Gilbert Hager and they soon married. Gib was a wonderful man! Grandma loved him so much. He too was a widower when they met. Gib passed away in 1992. They had lived in Perryville, MO. Grandma lived in Perryville until she was 95 yrs. old. My father made weekly trips (2 1/2 hrs each way) for years to check on grandma, take her shopping, help her do her errands, etc. She was very independent, strong, and classy as they come.

When grandma started getting more forgetful and fragile she moved back to California to live with my uncle, my dad's oldest brother. Taking her independence and home away from her caused her to go down hill fast. After a few years she was put in a nursing home to spend her final months. This broke my dad's heart. Grandma passed away in July 2009.

I will never forget that call. My son and I were traveling from Missouri to Destin. We were somewhere in the middle of Alabama, on the out-skirts of Birmingham. Around 8:00pm I got this weird feeling in my heart and broke out in goosebumps. Fifteen minutes later my dad called, he told me in the saddest voice, grandma Flossie had passed away. I will never forget grandma, she had the most caring heart and best laugh. She also had beautiful skin, the softest skin on her face. Her skin was so soft, even her wrinkles were soft and beautiful.
